This online workshop on 'Great Strategy in Uncertain Times' will be led by Professor Simon Haslam, Chartered Director, and Director, FMR Research Ltd.  This workshop is part of the IoD Essentials Workshop Series.

What Do I Gain from this Workshop?

• An appreciation of the limits of classic strategy models and how today’s turbulent times have changed strategy.
• An understanding of the main reasons why strategic decisions can go wrong.
• Insight into the psychology and biases at work in decision making, and how to mitigate their effects.
• An exploration of the ‘discovery led’ approach to strategic decision making, the recommended approach for strategic decision making in contemporary organisations.
• A checklist of ideas for individual leaders and their organisations to help improve strategic decision making. 

In this workshop, Professor Simon Haslam will take participants through the following key elements: 

• Is strategy possible in extreme conditions?
• The role of strategy when organisations face uncharted waters.
• The practicalities and approaches to simultaneously addressing the task of keeping your organisation viable.
• How to realise value in uncertainty.
• What great strategy looks like in practice?
• The 'discovery led’ approach: the three parts and the process.
• 'Top down’ and ‘Middle out’: the two types of strategic decisions.
• Biases and heuristics in strategic decisions.
• Implications for directors.
• Implications for organisations.

Professor Simon Haslam CDir is a Chartered Director (CDir) and is the Director and co-owner of a strategy research and consulting firm, FMR Research Ltd, and of the Consulting Mastered online platform. Simon is also the Programme Lead for Strategy at the Institute of Directors UK. In addition, he is the non-executive Chairman of a transport business. Simon has worked in the consulting sector in Ireland for 20 years. His firm has clients across the private, public and third sectors from SMEs to global brands.

Simon has an MBA from Durham University Business School and a PhD from Strathclyde Business School. He is a visiting Professor at Durham where he leads the Strategic Management module of its Global MBA programme. His book, Strategic Decision Making: A Discovery-Led Approach to Critical Choices in Turbulent Times, co-written with Dr Ben Shenoy, was published by Kogan Page in 2018.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Places can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Cancellations and a full refund will be accepted if received in writing to training@iodireland.ie by 5pm on Thursday, 9th March 2023. After this date, no refund will be possible, and all fees will be forfeited in the event of a cancellation or non-attendance.
