The event was opened by Caroline Spillane CDir, Chief Executive Officer, IoD Ireland, who welcomed attendees to the special Chartered Director Programme Alumni event at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The Chartered Director Programme Alumni is made up of past participants of the Chartered Director Programme, including holders of the Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction (a key component of the IoD Chartered Director Programme), and accredited Chartered Directors. It also includes current participants of the Programme.

The evening included an insightful panel discussion, networking, and an opportunity to experience one of IMMA's largest exhibitions in the museum's history, Self-Determination: A Global Perspective.

The panel discussion was moderated by John Reynolds CDir, President, IoD Ireland and had the following guest speakers:

  • Ali Curran, Chair, Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)
  • John Cunningham, Board Member, IMMA, Relationship Director, Morgan McKinley; Chairman and Country Director, Lysis Group; Chair Gaisce, The Presidents Awards; Chair the SERP Institute
  • Laura Magahy CDir, Executive Chair, CreativeBoardroom: Collaborate4Climate; Founder & Director, Arran Street East Craft & Design Studio.

The panel discussed the theme of governance in the cultural and creative sector, particularly in relation to why a director may choose to join an Arts Board. They also discussed the difference and similarities with other types of boards, such as the importance of carrying out due diligence as a director before joining a board.

Panellists referenced the rewarding experience of participating on a board in the public services sector along with having a personal interest and willingness to contribute to the creative sector as motivators.

Additionally, the panellists touched on the important topic of AI in the creative arts industry and the current state of play-tech with John Cunningham expressing that generative intelligence is "very exciting at the board level."

Panellist Laura Magahy CDir reflected on the CreativeBoardroom: Collaborate4Climate project, and the participation of several accredited Chartered Directors in Ireland. This project brings together the Chartered Director Communities of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and the students of the Creative Futures Academy.

Through the initiative, Chartered Director Communities have been identified as having significant potential to bring influence to bear in boardrooms across Ireland and to assist with the challenge presented to us by the climate emergency. During the project, Chartered Directors will work with students from Creative Futures Academy (CFA) to generate dynamic and creative solutions that can meaningfully address the complex environmental and social challenges that we currently face as a result of climate change.

We were delighted to host this event in partnership with IMMA for current and past participants of the Chartered Director Programme. The IoD Chartered Director Programme brings best-in-class solutions and life-long learning to directors. Offering peer-to-peer learning opportunities and access to leading experts, this programme is ideal for directors who wish to shape the future of leadership in Ireland.
