I am the General Manager for the Microsoft Ireland business, focused on driving digital transformation for both public and private sector organisations, leveraging innovative technologies such as AI and cloud computing to help them achieve greater efficiency and success. My vision for Microsoft Ireland is centred around empowering organisations to embrace digital innovation and to harness the power of technology to realise their full potential. I am also responsible for fostering key partnerships across Ireland and ensuring that Microsoft's innovative solutions align with the evolving needs of the Irish market.

Can you share your career journey and how it led to your current role as General Manager Microsoft Ireland?

I thoroughly enjoyed my international roles, specifically for the cultural diversity, but I always planned to return to the Irish market. When the chance came to lead the Dell business, I jumped at it.  Soon after, the role at Microsoft opened up, and I've always admired Microsoft's company culture, and securing this role was a dream come true. I'm delighted to be part of such an innovative and dynamic organization

What are the topics and trends that have been rising in the agenda in recent years in your role/sector?

In the past year, AI has made significant strides, especially in generative AI and large language models. These advancements have revolutionized industries by boosting productivity and creating new business opportunities.  Looking ahead, AI is set to transform all business processes, from hiring to operations, driving efficiency and innovation. As it continues to evolve, AI will be crucial in solving complex problems and unlocking new opportunities across various sectors.  How we adopt and integrate this technology is an evolving process and one that is very interesting for me.

What are the biggest business challenges or/and opportunities that you have seen over your career to date?

The biggest challenge and opportunity I've seen in my career is the fast pace of change. To handle this, I believe in continuous learning and challenging your mindset. You can do this by networking, mentoring, reading, and staying curious. Being adaptable and open to new ideas helps you navigate the ever-changing business world and seize opportunities for growth and innovation.  It's also important to build your own sense of calm, as it helps you stay focused and make better decisions under pressure, without compromising your resilience.

Personal Growth: How has stepping into the boardroom as a NED changed your perspective on leadership and business strategy?

Taking on an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) role has significantly changed how I view leadership and business strategy. This role has given me a wider perspective on how organizations work and are governed. I've learned the importance of balancing oversight with strategic guidance, making sure the company stays on track with its long-term goals while adapting to market changes. The INED position has also highlighted the value of diverse viewpoints and collaborative decision-making. It has reinforced the need for ethical leadership and accountability, which are crucial for sustainable success. Overall, this experience has deepened my understanding of effective leadership and strategic planning.

How do you advocate for diversity and inclusion within your business and boardroom?

I promote diversity and inclusion by being aware of all forms of bias and making sure they don't affect my decisions. I encourage open and inclusive conversations to help everyone understand each other better. I actively participate in networks that support diversity and get involved in their activities. I also understand that diversity goes beyond gender and includes race, ethnicity, age, and more. By focusing on these values, I aim to create a fair and welcoming environment for everyone.

Did you have mentors who influenced you? How did they shape your approach to leadership?

Mentorship is crucial for development because you can't progress alone. Evolving your leadership means evolving your thinking and awareness, and mentors can help with that. Navigating the business landscape and making decisions can be complex, so it's great to have someone to discuss these topics with and challenge your thinking. I've had numerous mentors and still do. They provide valuable guidance, helping me grow personally and professionally, and offer insights I might not have considered on my own. Having a mentor can make a significant difference in your career by providing support, advice, and a different perspective.

Securing your first NED appointment can be challenging and can take time. What advice would you give to others that may help them in their preparation given your own previous experience?

I think a good foundation for your first Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) role is a mix of formal training, experience, and networking. These elements are crucial as they equip you with the skills and connections needed to succeed. It's also important to know your strengths and what role you will play on the board. This awareness helps you understand your contributions and limitations, allowing you to define your role on the board effectively. By leveraging your unique skills and building a strong network, you can position yourself as a valuable asset to any board.

Do you have any golden rules that you follow in the boardroom? What personal values or philosophies guide your decision-making in the boardroom?

In the boardroom, I follow a few key rules,  first, I make sure I'm well-informed and understand the context and impact of each decision. This helps me make thoughtful and effective choices. I also believe in staying calm and collected, as rushing can lead to mistakes. Listening to other board members and asking questions is crucial for gaining diverse perspectives and making well-rounded decisions. These principles help me contribute effectively and uphold the integrity of the board's decision-making process.

Why did you join IoD Ireland? What do you particularly value from your IoD membership over the years?

I joined the Institute of Directors because I wanted to be on a board and it enabled me to connect with people who share the same mindset and this helped to guide me. The formal training programs are incredibly valuable and have greatly improved my skills. Being part of this network has given me the support and resources I need to achieve my goals and grow professionally.
